âDo you want to go somewhere for coffee?â Morgan asked Krys the moment they walked out of the morgue and into the corridor.
Krys shook her head. âNot unless that coffee comes with a side order of answers,â she told the detective.
âIn my business,â Morgan replied, âthose take time.â He paused for a moment as a thought occurred to him. âSince weâre down here, why donât we stop by the computer lab?â he suggested.
She thought of the puzzle they had dropped in Valriâs lap the last time they had stopped there. She doubted if the woman had come up with any answers, but since Morgan had suggested it, she thought they should check. She had already called ahead to reschedule her appointment at Gerryâs.
âSure,â Krys agreed gamely. âMight as well get all my disappointments over with at once,â she told Morgan.
âI didnât peg you for someone who just gave up,â he commented as they went down the opposite direction in the hall.
âIâm not giving up,â Krys protested. âIâm just taking your advice and preparing myself for the worst.â
âI also said, hope for the best,â he reminded her as they went toward the lab.
âSorry, right now my optimism is in rather low supply.â And then she realized how that had to have sounded to him. âBut donât worry, Iâll rally soon,â she promised. âItâs just that at the moment, I feel a little beaten downâalthough not nearly as badly beaten down as Claire isâwas,â she corrected herself.
Morgan thought it was safer not to comment on what sheâd just said.
However, as he walked into the computer lab, he looked at Valri. He found it impossible to gauge her mood. This could be good or bad.
âListen,â he told his cousin, âif you have anything hopeful to tell us, now would be the time to do it.â
âAll right,â she agreed. âBut this might be one of those things that qualifies as a bad news/good news situation,â Valri told him.
âWeâve already had one of those today, but go ahead,â he encouraged. âTell us.â
âYou said you wanted me to find out who Bluebeard was,â she reminded the two people at her desk.
âWe did,â Morgan confirmed. His breath felt as if it was sticking in his throat as he never took his eyes off her face, waiting to hear what he was almost certain that he was going to hear.
Valri smiled. âWell, I did.â
